The old unit fit the space, ran the load, and kept things cold. But a direct like-for-like replacement is one of the most common and expensive mistakes businesses make during a commercial refrigeration equipment upgrade.
The problem is that your operation today is rarely the same as when the original unit was installed. Menu changes, new product lines, higher throughput, even a kitchen renovation that altered airflow patterns. All of these shift the cooling demand. And the equipment market has changed too, with older refrigerants being phased out and Australian energy standards tightening over the past decade.

Australia has been phasing out R22 (an ozone-depleting HCFC) under the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management Act 1989. Bulk R22 imports have been capped at approximately 45 tonnes per year since 2016, and from 1 January 2030, bulk imports will be banned entirely.
After 2030, servicing R22 systems will depend entirely on reclaimed refrigerant. That means rising costs, limited availability, and increasing difficulty sourcing parts for R22-compatible equipment. If your current system runs on R22, replacing it with a unit designed for a modern refrigerant is not just a regulatory consideration. It is a practical one.

Confirming Refrigerant Options for Your Replacement Unit

Modern commercial refrigeration equipment typically uses HFC refrigerants (such as R-134a or R-410a) or lower-GWP alternatives like R-290 (propane) and R-449A. However, HFCs are also being phased down under the Montreal Protocol, with Australia targeting an 85% reduction in HFC use by 2036.
When selecting a replacement unit, confirm the following with your refrigeration technician:
  • Which refrigerant does the new unit use, and what is its long-term regulatory outlook?
  • Is the refrigerant compatible with the existing pipework if you are connecting to a shared system?
  • Does the replacement refrigerant require different pressure ratings or safety classifications?
These are not questions to leave until after the purchase.

Understand Current Energy Rating Requirements

Commercial refrigerated cabinets supplied in Australia must comply with the Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards (GEMS) Act 2012. The current framework for commercial units is set out in the GEMS (Refrigerated Cabinets) Determination 2024, which uses the Energy Efficiency Index (EEI) as the benchmark for minimum performance.

In many cases, newer units are significantly more energy efficient, which reduces running costs over the life of the equipment. When comparing options, request the GEMS registration ID and EEI for each model. A lower EEI means better energy performance within the same product class.

Electrical Capacity

Modern commercial refrigeration equipment often has different electrical requirements compared to older units. Higher-efficiency compressors, digital controls, and variable speed drives may require updated wiring, different circuit breaker ratings, or dedicated power supply. Before purchasing, have a licensed electrician confirm that the existing electrical infrastructure can support the new unit without modification.

Pipework and Spatial Constraints

If the new unit connects to shared refrigeration pipework (common in supermarket or multi-unit setups), the pipe diameter, insulation, and layout need to be assessed. A replacement unit with a different refrigerant or higher capacity may require larger bore piping or modified line sets. Physical footprint matters too. Even a unit with the same cooling capacity may have different dimensions, clearance requirements, or ventilation needs. Measure the space and check manufacturer specifications before committing.

When You Need a Redesign, Not Just a Replacement

In some cases, the evaluation above will reveal that a straight replacement is not the right path. If the operational load has changed significantly, the existing infrastructure cannot support a modern unit, or multiple pieces of equipment need updating at once, it may be more cost-effective to redesign the system rather than replace individual components.
